Kerryn and Mark are getting married in the lovely (and climatically volatile) Natal Midlands in September. I happened to be in Durban for work and so seized the opportunity to shoot my second successive engagement session at the coast – this time the warm Natal coast. We had a lovely afternoon in the Durban botanical gardens before heading over to the newly revamped North Beach promenade to see the city at dusk. It was such a treat to shoot such a fun couple in a city that doesn’t seem to know what Winter is (as you can see from the warm sunshine in the images below).
Can’t wait for the wedding!

It’s back by popular demand – this is the third time myself and Jo Fonseca are running a basics in digital photography course this year. It’s aimed at those of you who would like to get more out of your DSLR cameras and are too intimidated by reading the camera manuals (which to be honest are written by Japanese engineers and not photographers).
The course is limited to only 12 people and these slots book up really fast. Course fees include a full ‘dummies guide’ to using your camera and digital photography, a light lunch, beverages, and a practical shoot in the afternoon with myself and Jo.
Drop me a line in the comments section below or contact Jo to book your place.

Ever since Tim & Jackie’s wedding last year I have been looking for an opportunity for photograph a wedding in a purely journalistic style. By this I mean photographing an event with all it’s stories and moments without any interruption from myself; just observation, framing, and recording. It is a monumentally challenging photographic discipline, but one I find immensely rewarding.
I got my chance a few weekends ago when I went to assist my good friend and fellow photographer Jo Fonseca photograph the lovely Nicole and Clinton’s winter wedding. Whilst I did spend a good portion of my time helping out Jo, I did manage to record some of these images which I simply adore.
I don’t know if I’ve been watching too much Tour de France, or reading too much Cartier-Bresson – but I’ve really gone for a classic and grainy black and white theme to these images, a look made popular in the Paris in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I love this look as it really makes the images timeless. Too often as photographers and clients we get seduced into what’s fashionable and trendy and glamorous. But if hipsters and permed hair for men teach us anything, it’s that glamour and fashion is fleeting. A wedding album however, should not be.
All but three of these images below are spontaneous and undirected. I only used two lenses (35mm and 85mm) and no flash. Some of this images look posed and that’s because Jo posed the subjects, whilst I photographed from a different angle (often unknown and unseen by the subjects).
Enjoy, and please see some comments. It’s always good to hear from you folk.

I think Alice visits my blog more than I do. And so I was absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to photograph her forthcoming wedding to the very cool Mr Jason. Alice and Jason stay in Cape Town and whilst I’m a frequent visitor to Cape Town for business, I’ve not done nearly as many photographic assignments there as I would like.
On one such trip we managed to meet up and photograph Alice and Jason at the charming Kalk Bay area as well as head off into the vineyards of Groot Constantia. Being a Joburg boy I don’t often get to photograph the sea and vineyards, or for that matter intense wind!
Needless to say we had an absolute blast! Alice, Jason: thank you for the many laughs, for risking your lives on the rocks, and for freezing yourselves silly in the vineyards – all in the name of sweet photos. I genuinely cannot wait for September!
Below are some fav’s
